Delhi Govt. Order To Wear Mask In Car While Driving Alone 'Absurd': HC

Bench Questions, called it Absurd!

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court questioned the order issued by the Delhi Government making face Masks Mandatory while driving alone. The high court questions why? Why don't you withdraw it. It is actually absurd. You are sitting in your own car and you must wear a mask? Questioned the bench.

The court said that it expects the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to have a relook at its various guidelines in wake of the change in the Covid situation.

Please take instructions. Why is this order still prevailing? It is absurd actually. You’re sitting in your own car and you must wear a mask?” the division bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Jasmeet Singh told a government counsel.

This order came to focus after people were fined for not wearing a face mask. Rahul Mehra Senior advocate, representing the Delhi Government, informed that an order was issued by the Delhi government for a fine of rupees 500.

However, He referred to a tweet posted by a woman on January 29 in which she stated that she was drinking coffee with her mother in the car when she was fined Rs 2,000. He said the Pandemic is almost over. All those days when this was probably the right thing to do is not the right thing to do now. This relaxation must come in,” said the senior advocate.

Mr. Mehra has submitted that in the light of the change in the situation, the DDMA should also look at several orders issued by it in relation to COVID restrictions.

We hope and expect that DDMA to look into all aspects, and premised on medical opinion, issue fresh orders concerning COVID restrictions.

The Covid cases in the National Capital Delhi are declining. The capital city is returning to its normal schedule. The city is reporting a dip in its Covid-19 tally.  Also, the markets are reopening and the odd-even schedule has been removed and the weekend curfew has been withdrawn in the state.
