Delhi Police Deal With Farmers’ Tractor Rally Entering Delhi On R-Day: SC

SC directs Cops to deal with the framer’s tractor rally on R-day in Delhi.

The Supreme Court (SC) said today that the Delhi Police has to decide whether or not the entry to the protesting farmers to the national capital on Republic day must be allowed or restricted as it is a matter of ‘law and order’. The bench which was headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde said to deal with the matter Delhi Police has complete authority.

The bench comprising Justice LN Rao and Justice Vineet Saran also said “Does the SC say as to what are the powers of the police and how will they exercise them? We are not going to tell you what to do.” The SC also mentioned that on January 20 the matter will be taken for further hearing by Attorney General K K Venugopal.

In an application filed to the court by the Center through the Delhi Police has said that any proposed rally or protest which might disturb and disrupt the Republic Day celebrations will result in an “embarrassment to the nation.” The center also mentioned in the application that the right to protest does not include “malign the nation globally”. The Center then urged the top court to restrict anyone to organize any protest which could be in any form of tractor march, trolley march, vehicle march or any other mode to try and make an entry to the National Capital Region Territory of Delhi.

As repeated rounds of talks in the past with the government have failed to break the deadlock over the farm laws the protesting farmers have planned a tractor rally. The farmers have said that they fear the new farm laws will reduce their incomes and in the coming times it will leave them only at the mercy of the big corporate. The government has clearly refused to repeal the laws and is only ready to make amendments as per the recommendations of the farmers.

The SC put a hold on the farm laws and formed a committee last week in order to discuss the issue with all the sides and submit a detailed report after two months. However the farmers have rejected the committee pant citing that all the members present there were pro-government.
