Delhi Police files case against Greta; "Still stand with farmers," she says

Delhi Police filed a case against Greta Thunberg who has been actively tweeting in support of the farmers' agitation since Tuesday.

Delhi Police filed an FIR against Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg over the tweets she had posted in favour of the farmers' protest accusing her of "criminal conspiracy and promoting enmity." The Delhi Police have charged her with Section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race) and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

The 18-year-old activist tweeted in response to the case filed against her that said, "I still #StandWithFarmers and support their peaceful protest. No amount of hate, threats or violations of human rights will ever change that. #FarmersProtest." Ms Thunberg showed solidarity with the farmers' protest by sharing a CNN news that reported about the ongoing protests and internet services suspended by the government at the Delhi borders. The report was first shared by the pop singer, Rihanna on Tuesday.

As the protest became global and gained support from the international community, the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday issued a warning through a press statement that said, "Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken. The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible."

Ms Thunberg posted a toolkit suggesting people how to back the farmers' agitation but later deleted the post. On Thursday, she posted an upgraded list of seven ways to support the cause. The foreign ministry released the statement with hashtags IndiaTogether and IndiaAgainstPropaganda. These hashtags were also used by several Bollywood celebrities, ministers and sportspersons in their tweets.
