Delhi: Survey underway to install 1.38 lakh CCTV cameras

The CCTV cameras are yet to be installed at places like Vishwas Nagar, Mustafabad, and Gandhi Nagar constituencies.

For the safety of the city, the Delhi government is carrying out surveys across the capital to find best places to install 1.38 lakh CCTV cameras under the second phase of the project in order to boost public safety. Meanwhile, in the first phase of the project 1.4 lakh CCTVs were installed in 67 of the 70 assembly constituencies in Delhi, but CCTV cameras are yet to be installed at Vishwas Nagar, Mustafabad, and Gandhi Nagar constituencies.

The Delhi government said in a written response in the Delhi Assembly in reply to an unstarred question, that the first phase is in progress, while the second phase is in initial stages and surveys are being carried out. The government responded to a specific question which was asked regarding the constituencies where CCTVs haven’t been installed. The government said that soon CCTVs will be installed at Vishwas Nagar, Gandhinagar and Mustafabad.

In the past, the BJP alleged that the constituencies represented by its MLAs was being discriminated in this project. In 2019, the project had run into a controversy when Lt Governor Anil Baijal had formed a panel recommending that the Delhi Police should be made the custodian of the cameras.
