Delhi to reopen poultry markets after samples test negative

Delhi Government had shut down the Ghazipur poultry market on January 9 amidst bird flu scare.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday instructed to reopen Ghazipur poultry market and others that were closed since January 9 as a precautionary measure. Ban on sale and storage of poultry meat and eggs has been reversed after the Delhi Animal Husbandry Unit confirmed that bird flu was not detected in any of the poultry samples taken from the city.

"It means there is no spread of avian influenza in poultry birds in Delhi," senior Animal Husbandry Unit officer Rakesh Singh said on Thursday morning. Around 104 samples were sent from Delhi for testing. "Of these, 100 samples were collected from 35 poultry birds in the Ghazipur market. All samples have tested negative for bird flu," Mr Singh said. He also added that other four samples that were of Heron birds taken from a park might be infected with the bird flu.

"Samples taken from poultry markets have tested negative with respect to Bird Flu. Have directed to open the poultry market & withdraw the orders to restrict trade & import of chicken stocks," Mr Kejriwal tweeted on Thursday. Other than Delhi, nine states have confirmed bird flu.
