Dengue Cases Surge by 35 in One Week

Ongoing Medical Camps Address the Escalating Dengue Situation…


In the last week, Coimbatore has recorded 35 new cases of dengue, bringing the total number of individuals receiving treatment for the viral fever to 100.

 

The city corporation is actively monitoring and implementing measures to control the spread of dengue.

 

In the final week of December, an official source revealed that 65 cases of dengue were reported. The city corporation has pinpointed hotspots, with the highest number of cases concentrated in wards 11, 12, 28, and 20 in the north zone, as well as wards 22, 23, 8, 7, and 6 in the east zone.

 

To combat the issue, Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran mentioned the deployment of two vehicle-mounted fogging machines, along with 10 handheld machines, to eliminate dengue-breeding mosquitoes in these identified areas. Additionally, a 40-member rapid response task force has been stationed in each zone.

 

An alternate source reported the organization of 35 medical camps daily within the corporation limits. Over the past four months, a total of 4,500 medical camps have been conducted to address the situation.

 

As per the source, fines for maintaining unclean premises in dengue hotspots have been increased.

 

Over the last seven days, fines totalling Rs. 61,000 have been imposed, with a cumulative fine of Rs. 1.62 lakhs in December 2023. In 2023, the city recorded 1,336 dengue cases, up from 976 in 2022.

 

Additionally, the district is grappling with a surge in COVID-19 cases, currently standing at 18 active cases, posing an additional concern.
