IMD issues poor visibility alert in 4 states


On Tuesday, 20 December 2022, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in the morning a dense to very dense layer of fog had engulfed Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, North Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The thick blanket of fog has resulted in poor visibility in several cities. In Delhi's Palam, the visibility was just 25 metres as per data recorded at 5:30 am. In the Safdarjung area, the visibility was 50 metres.

The weather office reported visibility levels of 25 metres in Amritsar, Ganganagar, Patiala and Lucknow.

In Bhatinda, the fog was so dense that the visibility was reduced to 0. The dense fog cover is likely to continue over the next few days in the Indo-Gangetic plains.

A red alert for low visibility due to dense fog was issued for today and tomorrow in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh.

The poor visibility affected road and rail traffic movement and vehicles were seen driving cautiously on the streets.

The Delhi Airport also issued a fog alert and said low visibility procedures are in progress at the airport. It also added that, currently, all the flight operations are functioning normally.

According to the IMD, very dense fog is when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, while 51 and 200 is dense fog, 201 and 500 moderate, and 501 and 1,000 shallow.
