Deputy Prime Minister of Canadian will travel to India for G20 meet

First visit of Freeland in 5 years

Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, will travel to India this week to attend the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meetings in Bengaluru. Freeland's visit to India will be her first in nearly five years. She was Canada's foreign minister at the time, and she accompanied Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on a bilateral visit to India in February 2018.

She will be in India from February 23 to February 25, according to the Department of Finance Canada. "At these meetings, the Deputy Prime Minister will collaborate with Canada's international partners to address global challenges such as the economic consequences of Putin's illegal war, elevated inflation, climate change, international tax fairness, and global sovereign debt challenges," according to a press release.

The two ministers previously met in Toronto in September 2016, when Sitharaman was the Minister of Commerce and Industry and Freeland was the Minister of International Trade of Canada.

In addition, Freeland will commemorate the one-year anniversary of Russia's attack on Ukraine. "The Deputy Prime Minister will work with Canada's allies to ensure continued support for Ukraine and to hold Russia accountable for (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's assault on the people of Ukraine," the release said.
