Diamonds worth Rs 8.5 lakh mistaken as stones thrown away by thieves

The police recover stolen gold worth Rs 10.60 lakh from thieves who threw away the diamonds assuming it were just mere stones


 Diamonds worth Rs 8.5 lakh was thrown away by three interstate thieves who failed to recognize them. It was revealed by the Government Railway Police (GRP) when the thieves get arrested last week for committing several thefts on running trains. The police said the thieves might have broken the stone studded gold ornaments with an iron rod before discarding them thinking they were fake.

 

On August 10, the thieves had allegedly stolen purses of two women passengers onboard the Howrah-Mumbai Gitanjali Express near Gondia railway station. “One purse contained gold ornaments worth about Rs 19 lakh while in the other pursue there were valuables worth Rs 1lakh,” said investigation officer and PSI Pravin Bhimte. Both the theft cases were registered with Gondi police station. After the complaint was lodged, a special team was formed. Following which with the help of screening of reservation charts and CCTV footage, the team led by Bhimte found three passengers from Nagaon in Assam who were travelling in the train during the theft.

 

The police then viewed the CCTV footages of different railway stations like Nagpur, Durg and Gondia. The team went to Assam and the trio was arrested who were later identified as 26-year -old Nayanmuni Medhi, his 22-year-old younger brother Dipjyoti Medhi and 28-year-old Sanju Rai. The police have recovered stolen gold worth Rs 10.60 lakh from the trio.

 

“They melted the stolen gold ornaments and sold them to a goldsmith there. During interrogation, it came to fore that they were not aware that the ornaments were studded with diamonds, so they threw them away,” said PSI Pravin Bhimte. He further added that they have been put under the PCR of Nagpur railway police for four more days.
