Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin was appointed as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Wednesday and has been invited to form the government on May 7. The oath-taking ceremony will be held on Friday.

Earlier, Mr Stalin called the Governor and submitted his election letter as the leader of the legislature party. Mr Stalin was unanimously elected as the DMK Legislative Leader in the MLA meeting of the DMK in Anna Arivalayam on Tuesday. According to the release from the Raj Bhavan, the swearing-in ceremony will take place on May 7 at 9 am at Raj Bhavan in Chennai.

The DMK created history as it won 133 seats on its own and the alliance bagged 159 seats of the 234 seats. The party had not won more than 100 seats in assembly elections in the last 25 years.

After the party founder and his father, Mr Stalin will be the third chief minister of the DMK. Congress, which was in alliance with the DMK, also performed well as it won 17 of the 25 seats it fought. This time, the AIADMK could win only 66 seats as compared to the last assembly election win of 136 seats in 2016.
