Dominician court grants bail to fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi on medical grounds

India wants Choksi to get repatriated to the country to face trial in the Rs 13,000-crore PNB loan fraud case.

Fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi, who was arrested by the Caribbean island nation of Dominica, was on Monday granted bail by a court based on the medical grounds. The court allowed him to go back to Antigua and Barbuda, of which he has been a citizen since 2017. The Dominician court approved a consent order and allowed Choksi to travel to Antigua for treatment of a neurological disorder. India wants Choksi to get repatriated to the country to face trial in the Rs 13,000-crore PNB loan fraud case. Vijay Aggarwal, who is Choksi's lawyer, said that Dominica courts upheld the rule of law and rights of a human to be treated in the medical facilities of his choice. Reportedly, the bail plea was supposed to be heard on July 23 but was shifted to July 12 due to medical reasons.

According to The Indian Express, the Eastern Caribbean High Court in Dominica has asked him to furnish a bond of 10,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars and also asked him to return to Dominica after treatment. On India's request, Choksi is facing a case of extradition in Antigua.
