DRDO And Indian Army Jointly Develops ASMI

ASMI, India’s first machine gun developed by DRDO and Indian Army.


India has developed its first indigenous 9mm machine pistol ASMI which was co produced by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Army said the Ministry of Defence on January 14. The army infantry school in Mhow and the DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune had designed the weapon. The weapon was developed in a record time of 4 months said the defence ministry.

The ministry in a statement said “The machine pistol fires the in-service 9mm ammunition and sports an upper receiver made from aircraft grade aluminum and lower receiver from carbon fiber. Three dimensional printing processes have been used in designing and prototyping of various parts.” The weapon had massive potential in armed forces as personal weapon for different missions which will also include counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations. The ministry also said “The machine pistol is likely to have a production cost under 50000 rupees each and also has potential for exports.”
