Drugs worth over 8 crores seized in Assam

7.65 mm pistol,600 gm heroin value at Rs 6 crore and 20 ammunition found from drug peddler after fire exchange


Acting on a tip-off that three-four people were smuggling drugs through the Dimapur Sunday Bazar Road in Karbi Anglong district on Monday. The police ambushed the suspected peddlers and seized heroin worth Rs 8 crore from one of the suspects who got injured in exchange of fire with the police on Tuesday.

As per reports, they allegedly fired at the police who struck back in self-defense. Afterwards, the police found a wounded man lying on the ground with 7.65 mm pistol and a backpack. He sustained bullet injuries in the encounter. Fifty soap cases with 600-gram heroin, valued at Rs 6 crore and 20 ammunitions were found in the bag bedside him. The drug peddler has been shifted to the hospital for treatment. A search is on to find the rest of the drug peddlers, two of whom fled towards Nagaland.

An arrest was made in Nagaon district and 303 gm of heroin worth Rs 2 crore was seized. The suspect was identified as RK Hopingson, who was the most-wanted drug dealer from Senapati district in Manipur. His car was intercepted by the police while he was transporting the drugs from Dimapur to Nagaon. Hopingson was based in Dimapur in Nagaland and allegedly smuggled drugs through peddlers across the Northeastern states, a police officer said.

Just about four weeks ago the Assam police destroyed a huge quantity of contraband drugs worth over Rs 5 crore in Morigaon district. The drugs destroyed included 198.478 kg of ganja, 561.89 gram of heroin, 212.01 gram of brown sugar, 6289 cough syrup bottles, 83151 numbers of tablets.
