Election Commission notice to Udhayanidhi for alleged remarks on Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley

The EC has asked Udhayanidhi Stalin to respond to the notice before 5.00 pm on Wednesday.

The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday issued a notice to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of DMK chief MK Stalin, for his alleged remarks that late Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj died as they were "unable to tolerate the pressure and torture" exerted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The EC has asked him to respond to the notice before 5.00 pm on Wednesday and also warned him that if he fails to do so, the Commission will take a decision without any further reference to him. According to the notice, the EC received a complaint from the BJP on April 2. There were allegations that Udhayanidhi Stalin addressed a political gathering in Dharapuram on March 31 in which he made a statement that said, "Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley (both Union ministers) died unable to tolerate the pressure and torture given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi."

Udhayanidhi's comment was a reaction to the Prime Minister’s remark against him at a rally in Dharapuram on March 30, where he had said, “The crown prince (Udhayanidhi) has sidelined several leaders in the DMK to come up.” Sushma Swaraj’s daughter Bansuri Swaraj and Arun Jaitley’s daughter Sonali Jaitley had criticised Udhayanidhi for his comment.
