Enhancement of water supply in Delhi

CM Kejriwal set an action plan to ensure good water supply

On 15 March 2023, the chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, set up a high level meeting with the water resources minister, Saurabh Bhardwaj, along with Gopal Rai, the forest minister, and many other high level officers to enlighten them on the issue of water sources and supply and increase the availability of the drinking water in households in the national capital.

The core concept of the meeting was to minimize the water wastage and improve the quality and quantity of water. The CM Kejriwal instructed the departments working on the project to install the water chain within six months of obtaining the land in good condition for all tube wells. He further mentioned that they have to set up an agency for maintaining the tube wells for five years, and any damage that occurs should be rectified within 24 hours to the tube wells.

The water will be transferred to the underground reservoirs (UGRs), where water meters will be installed to curb the water wastage, and later it will be supplied further for the consumer usage.

Along with water supply, the chief minister also informed the departments about the challenges they are facing in acquiring land to set up a sewage treatment plant and asked the departments to look into the matter.

Following the meeting, he also stated that he would arrange for reverse osmosis (RO) systems alongside lakes to clean and treat water until September 30. Delhi has nearly 1200 water tanks and 250 water bodies under the DDA.

The next meeting will be held on 25 March 2023 by CM Kejriwal with the Delhi Jal Board.
