Farmers declare 'Kisaan Parade' on Republic Day

Farmers will carry out a parade on January 26, the union said in a statement.

Farmers  protesting the contentious agricultural laws have threatened to hold a tractor rally, naming it as 'Kisaan Parade' after the Republic Day parade on January 26 in Delhi. The protesters said that they chose this particular date as it will mark completion of two months of the protests and also because this day symbolises the supremacy of the people of India. The farmers have been protesting since November as they want the government to repeal the three farm laws it passed earlier.

Dr Darshanpal, one of the leaders, said in a statement that they will hold discussions with the government on January 4 and the Supreme Court will hear the matter the next day. According to him if the government does not fulfill their demands, they will hold a tractor rally in Haryana on January 6. They will protest for 15 days following which they will hold a protest outside the Governor's House on January 23 which marks the birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose.  "On January 26, we will hold a massive rally in Delhi with tricolours on tractors. We give a call for countrywide protests at all headquarters (of the unions)," he further added. "We intend to be peaceful and we told long ago to the government during our talks that it has only two opinions- either repeal the three central farm acts or use force on us to evict us." he said in a statement.

Another farmer leader, Gurnam Singh Chadhuni told the reporters that the government was trying to mislead them regarding the minimum support price (MSP).He said that they want a law regarding it as it is their right. Till now, three nationwide protests have been held.
