First woman officer to command an EME unit near the China border

Colonel Geeta Rana succeeded in becoming the first woman officer at the EME unit


On 9 March 2023, after the army came up with a decision to recruit women officers for command roles, the army deployed Colonel Geeta Rana of the corps of electronics and mechanical engineers and she became the first woman officer who will take command to an independent field workshop in the remote location of Eastern Ladakh Sector with China.

The Indian army officials from fire and fury corps tweeted about the deployment and shared that they have cleared 108 vacancies for women officers for taking command in independent units of corps of engineers, ordinance, EME and others branches. They further added that many women officers have already come out and others would be coming out as the board would be compiled and the result will be declared soon and they all will be considered for future promotions also to the higher ranks in the force.

Following the information the Army chief general Manoj Pande is in favour of giving all possible opportunities to the women in the force and in joint exercises with friendly foreign countries and in peacekeeping mission.
