FOR PAKISTAN FLOOD RECOVERY DONORS HAS PLEDGED $9bn

AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE, GENEVA

To rebuild and recovery of Pakistan from last year’s devastating floods donors at international conference in Geneva have pledge to give more than $9bn.

On Monday Pakistan is hosting the event in Geneva along with the United Nations to seek international assistance in order to cover around half of a total $16.3bn recovery bill.

A one-day conference held by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and UN Secretary general Antonio Guterres, which included officials from nearly 40 countries as well as private donors and international financial institutions.

Unimaginable flood which is caused by melting glaciers last year, according to the UN has effected more than 33 million people, killing more than 1,700 people and about nine million others were pushed into poverty.

Still thousands of people are living in open areas, tents and had shifted homes from two worst hit areas, Sindh and Balochistan, with stagnant water still present in many areas.

Pakistani Deputy Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar said the final tally came in above a target for the international community.

“Taken as a whole, these commitments total more than $9 billion and from what we know so far, these are all additional commitments from what was already given in terms of humanitarian assistance, etc., from both bilateral and multilateral partners,” she said, adding that a number of delegations had also offered up in-kind support.
