Former CPI leader Kanhaiya Kumar joins Congress; Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani extends support

Jignesh Mevani said that since he is an independent MLA, he cannot join the party formally as it could result in his disqualification.


 Former Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU), Kanhaiya Kumar on Tuesday officially joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in presence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi.

Independent Gujarat MLA and Dlait leader, Jignesh Mevani extended his "full support" to the party, though he could not join the party formally due to technical reasons. He said that since he is an independent MLA, he cannot join the party formally as it could result in his disqualification.

Mr Mevani added that he would contest the 2022 state elections on the Congress symbol. He said that he believes in the ideology of the party and the formality of joining the party officially can be done later as well.
