Former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti denied passport over 'national security concerns'

Mehbooba Mufti shared a copy of the notice on her Twitter account and said that the report of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) was cited as the reason to deny her the passport.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, was denied passport by authorities over 'national security concerns.' She shared a copy of the notice on her Twitter account and said that the report of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) was cited as the reason to deny her the passport.

"Passport Office refused to issue my passport based on CID's report citing it as 'detrimental to the security of India. This is the level of normalcy achieved in Kashmir since Aug 2019 that an ex Chief Minister holding a passport is a threat to the sovereignty of a mighty nation," read her tweet.

Ms Mufti had applied for a new passport in December 2020 after her previous one expired. “In view of the J&K Criminal Investigation Department (CID) report, your case was found to attract refusal under Section 6 (2) (c) of the Passport Act, 1967," read the letter. The letter added that due to this reason, her application for issuance of passport was refused.

Ms Mufti was placed in detention for more than a year after the Centre had scrapped Article 370 in August 2019 and was released in October 2020. The 61-year-old is also facing multiple charges and she has alleged that the ruling Central Government was trying to replace the Constitution with its party manifesto.
