Former Rajya Sabha MP, journalist Chandan Mitra passes away

The 66-year-old Chandan was a two-time Rajya Sabha MP and had worked as the Managing Director of The Pioneer (Delhi) till June this year.


Former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) and prominent journalist Chandan Mitra, who had been ill for some time, died on Wednesday night. His son, Kushan Mitra confirmed the news by tweeting on his Twitter handle.

The 66-year-old Chandan was a two-time Rajya Sabha MP and had worked as the Managing Director of The Pioneer (Delhi) till June this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Mr Mitra. He tweeted that Chandan Mitra will be remembered for his intellect and insights as he distinguished himself in the world of media and politics. PM Modi added that he was anguished by his demise.

Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta posted a photo from a school trip in 1972 along with a tweet that read, "I lost my closest friend—editor of Pioneer & former MP Chandan Mitra—this morning. We were together as students of La Martiniere & went on to St Stephen’s & Oxford. We joined journalism at the same time & shared the excitement of Ayodhya & the saffron wave."

Chandan Mitra joined politics in 2003 when he was nominated as a Rajya Sabha member. He was again elected to another term in the Upper House as a BJP MP from Madhya Pradesh in 2010. Later in 2018, he joined the All India Trinamool Congress. Before joining The Pioneer, he had worked as a journalist with The Statesman, The Times of India, The Sunday Observer, and the Hindustan Times.
