The outbreak of violence occurred just two days after the arrest of two individuals suspected of killing a police officer in Moreh.

The Manipur government has enforced a complete curfew in the district due to concerns about the "breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility, and grave danger to human lives and property" within the revenue jurisdiction of Tengnoupal.

On Tuesday night, village volunteers engaged in gunfire with suspected Kuki militants at Koutruk village in Imphal West district. The central government forces intervened to stop the exchange of fire.

Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate were arrested by local police on Monday for allegedly murdering SDPO Ch Anand last October. The arrest followed their firing at security personnel vehicles, leading to a police chase and capture.

They have been remanded to nine days of police custody following their arrest.

Police reported seizing one pistol with two live rounds, one Chinese hand grenade, ten live rounds of AK ammunition, and ten detonators from the possession of Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate.

Numerous women gathered to protest outside the Moreh police station, demanding the "unconditional release" of individuals involved in the incident.

Since May of last year, over 200 people have lost their lives in the ongoing violence between the dominant Meitei and Kuki communities.
