Goa: Veteran Congress leader Luizinho Faleiro resigns from party

Mr Faleiro called Ms Banerjee a "streetfighter" and said that she is the only one who can give a "tough fight" to the BJP.

Veteran Congress leader Luizinho Faleiro on Monday quit the party after 40 years and resigned from the post of Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). He is likely to join Trinamool Congress (TMC) as minutes before resigning, he had praised TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Mr Faleiro represented the Navelim Assembly seat and was recently appointed the chief of the Goa Congress campaign committee in the wake of the state polls that are to be held next year. He submitted his resignation to the Assembly Speaker Rajesh Patnekar and with his resignation the party's strength has been reduced to four.

Mr Faleiro called Ms Banerjee a "streetfighter" and said that she is the only one who can give a "tough fight" to the BJP. Meanwhile, TMC leader Derek O'Brien said on Saturday that the party will contest in the upcoming Assembly polls in Goa and they were in touch with several local leaders. He added that the party will soon announce its chief ministerial candidate.
