Gujarat Hit by Unseasonal Rainfall: 20 Fatalities Reported

Crops and Stored Grain Face Extensive Damage...

Unexpected rain caused by a weather disturbance hit many parts of Gujarat on Sunday, leading to 14 reported deaths by 8 pm. Surat airport faced low visibility, resulting in one flight diversion and delays for at least 10 other flights.

Lightning during thunderstorms claimed the most lives in Dahod, with four casualties, followed by three in Bharuch and two in Tapi. Government authorities also reported the unfortunate loss of at least 40 animals.

Showers, strong winds, and hailstorms resulted in extensive crop damage and property destruction. Officials mentioned that the assessment of the damage would occur after the rains subside. SEOC reported the highest rainfall between 6 am to 8 pm in Chuda, Surendranagar (111mm), followed by Surat city (99mm), Umarpada in Surat (89mm), Nadiad (80mm), and Kukarmunda in Tapi (77mm).

Fifteen talukas received over 50mm of rainfall, while 50 talukas recorded between 25mm to 50mm. Out of Gujarat's 252 talukas, 233 registered at least 1mm of rain on Sunday. The IMD forecast suggests a reduction in impact by Tuesday, with light rains anticipated in certain areas of South Gujarat.
