Guru Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated on 15 Feb every year


On every 15 February, Indians celebrate the birth of Guru Ravidas as Guru Ravidas Jayanti. He was a Bhakti movement saint during the 15th to 16th century.

 

Guru Ravidas is said to have written several hymns and some of them were embraced by Sikhism's holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. 

 

The saint-poet worked religiously towards reforming the society and removing biases of the caste system. The day is celebrated mostly in north India, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Chandigarh.

 

Talking about the rituals North Indians perform a special aarti and a Nagar Kirtan possession is taken out on the streets.

 

Hundreds of devotees gather to take a dip in the river, which forms a part of the customary practice. Prayers are offered in the temples dedicated to Guru Ravidas, especially in the Bhawan.

 

Moreover, all gurudwaras across the country make special arrangements on this special occasion. They are adorned with colourful lights and special prayer meetings in adoration of Guru Ravidas are put in place. Amritbani, which is the holy book of the Ravidassia religion, is read.

 

Moreover, the official symbol of the Ravidassia religion is changed in a special ceremony. The Nag Kirtan is the prime feature of the festival. A few people dressed up as Guru Ravidas and his supporters.

 

To remember the Guru and his teachings, a huge celebration takes place at Shri Guru Ravidass Janam Asthan Mandir, Seer Goverdhanpur, Varanasi. Devotees from all over the country flock together to celebrate the Guru’s birthday.

 

Guru Ravidas Jayanti takes place on the full moon of the month of Magh according to the Hindu calendar.

 

As per the Gregorian calendar, the festival falls in February month. The festival of Guru Ravidas Jayanti is of utmost significance for those who entrust in the beliefs and ideologies of Ravidas religion. It is the most significant day of the year.
