Guwahati: Over 800 people arrested in a major crackdown

In a special operation.....

On Tuesday Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that over 800 accused were arrested in a major crackdown.

Nearly three weeks after Sarma warned the development comes that 3,000 people will be arrested in the state for their involvement in child marriages.

"In a massive crackdown against child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused persons in a special operation which began in the early hours of dawn," said Sarma in a tweet.

Last month, police had detained 17 fake "qazis" (a person who solemnises Muslim marriages) in different operations in Hailakandi district of Assam.

In the first round of a massive crackdown on child marriages in February, the state police arrested hundreds of people from across the state, including family members and clerics who officiated these unauthorised weddings.
