Celebrating 'Bal Diwas' on Jawaharlal Nehru's Birthday

Children's Day, also known as 'Bal Diwas,' is observed every year on November 14 in India. It is a day dedicated to recognizing and honoring children, acknowledging their significance as the future of the country. This date coincides with the birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, affectionately known as 'Chacha Nehru' by the young ones.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad, India, passionately advocated for children's rights and promoted an inclusive education system. His vision aimed for a society where knowledge was within reach for everyone. Nehru, recognizing each child as the foundation of the nation's future, beautifully conveyed his sentiments in the well-known quote: "Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow."

Why do we celebrate Children's day on Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday?

Before, Children's Day in India was on November 20, aligning with 'World Children's Day' globally. But, after Jawaharlal Nehru passed away in 1964, the government decided that his birthday, November 14, would be the official Children's Day. Since then, India celebrates Children's Day to honor its first Prime Minister, also known as Bal Diwas.

Jawaharlal Nehru's era saw the establishment of significant educational institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Affectionately referred to as "Chacha Nehru," he played a pivotal role in shaping India's educational landscape during his tenure.
