Haryana farmers end standoff over officer row as govt orders probe

The probe will be conducted by a retired judge while former SDM Ayush Sinha has been sent on leave.

The farmers ended their week-long protest outside the Karnal district headquarters after the Haryana government on Saturday ordered a probe into the clashes that had taken place between the farmers and the police on August 28. The state government has also sent former SDM Ayush Sinha on leave, who was at the centre of the row over his remarks to "smash their (farmers) heads."

Haryana Additional Chief Secretary Devender Singh said that the probe will be completed within a month and will be headed by a retired judge. After both parties reached an agreement, they held a joint press conference and ended the sit-in standoff.

On August 28, protesters were lathicharged by the police in Karnal when the farmers tried to march towards the venue of a BJP meeting. Sinha, IAS officer of 2018 batch was taped allegedly ordering policemen to smash the heads of farmers who cross the line.

The farmers had been demanding suspension of Sinha, however, he was transferred out of the city and posted as additional secretary of the Citizen Resources Information Department. The farmers had also demanded an FIR to be registered against him as well as police officials involved in the incident.
