On Thursday, 14 September 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted people on 'Hindi Diwas'.

This day is observed on this day every year and is aimed at promoting the Hindi language.

"Best wishes to all my family members on the Hindi Diwas. I wish the Hindi language will continue to strengthen the roots of national unity and harmony," he said on X.

Hindi is majorly spoken in states like UP, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Punjab.

Hindi is spoken even in countries like Mauritius, Nepal, Fuji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago.

Hindi is written in the Devanagari script, which is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the country.

Hindi is one of the official languages of the Union Government, with the other being English.

After India gained Independence, an official language was needed to streamline communication between government departments and reach out to the public.

The Constituent Assembly then accepted Hindi as the official language of India on September 14, 1949.

The first Hindi Diwas was celebrated in 1953. Hindi was adopted as one of the official languages under Article 343 of the Indian Constitution.
