Delhi court grants bail to journalist Mandeep Punia


Freelance journalist Mandeep Punia was granted bail by the Delhi court today who was arrested on Sunday from the Singhu border point in Haryana where the farmers are protesting against the three farm laws introduced by the center last year. The Rohini court granted bail to Mr Punia on a guarantee of 25,000 rupees. The court reiterated while passing the order that “bail ought to be the norm, jail an aberration.”

The Delhi police was seeking a dismissal of the bail application of Mr Punia by saying that he might again be involved in instigating the protestors at the protest and creating a nuisance at the protest site. The accused tried to break the barricade and scuffled with the deployed police personnel who were deputed on a highly sensitive law and order arrangement said the agency and added that Mr Punia never cooperated nor did he disclose the name of his associates.

Journalist Punia was charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) namely, Section 186 (obstructing any public servant while discharging any public functions), Section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharging his duty), Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty). The FIR was registered at around 1 am on Sunday, January 31.
