India confirms Asia’s first Monkeypox death!

22-year-old man died of MonkeyPox

India confirmed its first death from Monkeypox on Monday. A young man 22-year-old in the southern state of Kerala. It is only the fourth known fatality from the disease in the current outbreak.

Spain reported two deaths from Monkeypox last week and Brazil reported its first death. The sad demise that happened in India is also the first Monkeypox death in all over Asia. On July 23, 2022, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global health emergency.

The Indian man who was just 22-year-old died on Sunday due to Monkeypox, reported Kerala’s revenue minister. The minister also told the reporters that 21 people who had been in direct with the deceased man are currently in isolation. Minister K. Rajan said, “The person reached Kerala on July 21 but visited a hospital on July 26 when he displayed fatigue and fever”. He also added that there was no reason to worry as none of the contacts had shown any symptoms.

Veena George, Kerala’s health minister told the reported on Sunday that the man’s family informed the authorities the previous day that he had tested positive for Monkeypox in the United Arab Emirates before he departed for India. So far India’s federal health minister had made no comments on the death except for saying that the government had established a task force of senior officials to monitor Monkeypox cases closely in the country, where the local media have so far reported at least five cases.

Last month the World Health Organization (WHO) said that a total of 78 countries have reported more than 18,000 cases of Monkeypox and majority of them in Europe.
