International Mother Language Day 2024

Theme, History, Importance, and Events

Every year on February 21st, we mark International Mother Language Day, a time to highlight the importance of preserving and celebrating our native languages while promoting multilingualism.

India actively promotes linguistic and cultural diversity. International Mother Language Day holds immense significance for individuals striving to enhance their proficiency in their mother tongue and deepen their understanding of it.

HISTORY

International Mother Language Day originated in Bangladesh in 1952, following the tragic deaths of four students who spearheaded a movement advocating for Bengali to be recognized as the official language of the country.

In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated International Mother Language Day. The proposal was also welcomed by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

THEME

The theme for International Mother Language Day 2024 revolves around "Multilingual education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational understanding."

The theme underscores the critical need to safeguard the cultural heritage and traditional knowledge embedded within mother tongues. It further accentuates the role of multilingualism in fostering peaceful coexistence and sustainable development.
