Janmashtami 2023!

Rituals and celebrations...

One of the most well-known festivals is Krishna Janmashtami, which is widely observed by Hindus in India and other nations. The holiday, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, and Sree Jayanthi, commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna.

He is adored throughout India and is believed to be Lord Vishnu's eighth avatar. Krishna is referred to in Hindu epics as the god of love, gentleness, and compassion. He was born at midnight to Queen Devaki and King Vasudeva in a prison in modern-day Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. In addition, he is renowned for using his extraordinary abilities to work miracles and pull off mischievous pranks.

On both September 6th and 7th of this year, Janmashtami will be observed.

Rituals and celebrations

Devotees observe fast, dress traditionally, bathe and adorn Lord Krishna's idols with fresh clothing and jewelry, and ask for blessings for the welfare of their families on this day. In addition, many fast during rituals and decorate their homes with flowers and rangoli.

Some people eat light, sattvik meals throughout the day, however a portion of people observe 'nirjala vrat' till midnight, thought to be the birth hour of Lord Krishna.

The worship for Lord Krishna is done in Nishita Kaal because he was born at midnight. After commemorating Krishna's birth at midnight, devotees give his statues their favorite dairy products, including milk and curd.

Another ritual when players shatter an earthen pot loaded with butter and curd that is suspended from a height is called Dahi Handi.
