Joyce Dopkeen died at the age of 80

First woman photographer hired in The New York Time...

Joyce Harriet Dopkeen took her last breath in Rockville, Maryland on Tuesday. The cause of death in the hospital is cardiac arrest.

Dopkeen was the first woman photographer who worked as full-time staff at the New York Times in 1973. She devoted her 34 years in her entire career to photojournalism after she received her Polaroid camera as a gift from her parents when she was a teenager.

She was fascinated by the concept of capturing people, emotions, events and history. After completing her schooling from Howard School for Girls in Massachusetts she chose her career in photojournalism and earned her degree in Bachelor in science in photojournalism from Boston university school of public communication in 1964.

After her graduation she got her full-time job immediately and she joined the Boston Globe in 1967. She also won first place in the united press international of Massachusetts photography competition in two category personality and features and also earned a front-page award from the newswomen club of New York in year 1974.

Her last quotes to the word was shared in 2019 that if a reporter misses a quote is one thing as they can’t get a quote from somebody but if a photographer misses it.
