Justice NV Ramana will be sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India on April 24 after the retirement of CJI SA Bobde on April 23.

President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Justice NV Ramana as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) who will take over on April 24. CJI SA Bobde had recommended Justice Ramana as his successor last month, through a letter to the Union law ministry. CJI Bobde who is due to retire on April 23, was sworn in as the 47th CJI in November 2019 after succeeding Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Justice Ramana, who will be the 48th CJI, was appointed to the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.

Justice Ramana will have a long tenure as the CJI with over 16 months in service as he is set to retire on August 26, 2022. Justice Ramana who hails from Andhra Pradesh was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in June 2000. He also served as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court before being appointed to the Supreme Court in February 2014.

Recently, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had written to CJI Bobde and complained about Justice Ramana's connection with the Amaravati land scam. However, the Supreme Court had dismissed the allegations made by Mr Reddy after following an in-house procedure to examine them.
