Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan will contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls from Coimbatore South constituency. Mr Haasan, the president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) made the announcement on Friday while releasing the second list of the party's candidates. The chief ministerial candidate of MNM will compete the BJP and the Congress candidates from the constituency.

Mr Haasan’s name was not included in the first list released by the party on Wednesday, generating rumours that the actor might be contesting from Alandur in Chennai, where former chief minister and AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran had won twice and held the seat for nine years. Among other names declared in MNM's second list are Dr Subha Charles from Kanyakumari, Dr R Mahendran (Singanallur), Dr Santosh Babu (Velacherry), and Pazha Karupiah (T Nagar). Alandur has been allotted to Sharad Babu.

The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is contesting elections in alliance with the BJP, the DMK with the Congress and the MNM is in alliance with the Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) and fellow actor Sarathkumar's All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK). Both the parties will contest in 40 seats. In 2016, the AIADMK had won the Assembly elections with 136 seats while the DMK had secured the second spot by winning 98 seats.
