Karnataka: Congress wins big in Urban Local Body polls with 119 seats

Congress State President DK Shivakumar urged the party workers and leaders not to celebrate in any way and continue to assist people during the time of national health emergency.

The Congress on Friday scored a landslide victory in the Urban Local Body (ULB) polls held across several districts in Karnataka. Of the 266 wards in 10 ULBs, the Congress won 119, the Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) won 67 and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured third position by winning 56 wards.

The results came as a big setback for the ruling BJP. Congress State President DK Shivakumar tweeted, "Congress has won 7 out of the 10 Urban Local Bodies that went to polls. BJP has won only 1. I thank the people of Karnataka for placing their confidence in the Congress Party and punishing the BJP for its misrule. Overall, Congress won 119 seats, while BJP won just 56 and JD(S) 67."

Mr Shivakumar urged the party workers and leaders not to celebrate in any way and continue to assist people during the time of national health emergency. Congress won Ballari and Teerthahalli which are the strongholds of the ruling BJP while Congress emerged as the single largest party in Bidar.

The leader of the opposition in the assembly, Siddaramaiah said that the Chief Minister BS Yeddiyurappa has lost confidence of the people and suggested that he should dissolve the assembly and seek a fresh mandate. He thanked the voters and said that people have taught a lesson to the ruling BJP.
