Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar's controversial comment on women has received lot of criticism lately. While speaking at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences on World Mental Health Day in Bengaluru Dr Sudhakar said, “Today I am sorry to say this. A lot of modern women in India want to stay single. Even if they get married, they don’t want to give birth they want surrogacy. So, there is paradigm shift in our thinking which is not good.” He even went on to add “Unfortunately we are going in a western way. We don’t want our parents to live with us forget about grandparents being with us today.”

Many pointed out how sexist and problematic his remarks were which reflects our regressive society. Women activist Subhashini Ali condemned Sudhakar’s remarks on modern Indian women calling it Manuwadi thinking and urged him to reflect on his conservative and poor thinking.

Later on, Karnataka Minister clarified that his statements were taken out of context while his main focus was that families are a source of valuable mental support which help in managing stressful situations and that traditional joint family are a good source of mental support as per the research.
