The Karnataka government on Tuesday announced the one percent reservation for transgenders in government jobs in all categories of employment to be filled through the direct recruitment process in the state. The internal reservation will be available for vacancies in all categories Of merit, Schedule caste, schedule tribe, and Other Backward Classes. The amendment Rule 9 of the Karnataka Civil Services showcase in the process of recruitment a separate column to allow as other. The government of Karnataka now will follow the definition of ‘transgender person’ as in the Act, 2019 Protection of Rights. As in terms of this act, ‘transgender person’ is one whose gender does not match with the gender assigned to them at birth, and includes transman or transwoman, a person with intersex variations, genderqueer and those who have socio-cultural identities such as kinnar, hijra, aravani and jogta. In the direct recruitment 1% vacancies relate to all the categories, which will be an issue by government in the viewpoint of the appointment filled from among transgender candidates,” the amendment declares.

Earlier in this month, the draft notification has been submitted to  Karnataka High Court in the time of PIL filed by Sangama, a non -profit organization that works for the welfare of the transgender community with an activist Nisha Gulur with that Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Suraj Govindaraj also got a copy of the draft notification. Taking about the rules which signify the number of eligible transgender people are not available in the amount of 1 percent whereas the vacancies should be fill up by the same category of male and female.
