Kerala High Court: Revamp sex education

Kerala high court called for revamping sexual education after rising in teenage pregnancies...

The Kerala High Court has called for revamping sexual education as the state sees a rising number of teenage pregnancies. The High court suggested that revamping sexual education being imparted at school level can help the situation. The Court said that in this generation the easy availability of porn had damaged the situation and mislead youngsters.

Justice VG Arun concluded the court’s decision as he undertook the petition (WP-C NO. 23092/22), that was filed by the mother of a 13-year-old girl who was raped by her brother and is now 30 weeks pregnant.

The court allowed the mother’s plea for medical termination of Pregnancy (MTP). “Before parting with the case, I am compelled to express concern at the increasing number of child pregnancies, in which at least some cases involve close relatives (Incest). In my opinion, it is time for the authorities to take a re-look at the sexual education being imparted in our schools. The easy availability of porn on the internet can mislead the juvenile mind of youngsters and given them wrong ideas. Educating our children about the safe use of internet and social media is absolutely essential” the court said.

The court also considered another petition (BA NO. 3272/22) in an order by Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas asking the authorities to revamp the sexual education system in the State as youngsters are turning into rapists and indulging in sex without being aware of the harsh punishment under POSCO act and then lose their future. However, the court considered many cases as teenage pregnancies the state has also seen a massive rise in rape cases, most of these incest pregnancies are rape cases where youngsters turn into cruel rapists and the victims suffer the consequences of it.
