Kerala journalist released from UP jail

Siddique Kappan spent more than 2 years in jail


On 2 February 2023, Lucknow district jail in Uttar Pradesh released Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan. He was arrested under the charges of the unlawful activity prevention act (UAPA) and the prevention of money laundering act (PMLA) and prisoned on 5 October 2020 for traveling to Hathras to cover the Hathras rape case.

A special session of court in Lucknow on Thursday signed the release order of kappa after he got the bail in PMLA logged by the enforcement directorate.

The journalist along with three arrested at Mathura toll plaza by Uttar Pradesh Police for provoking violence in the alleged rape of a 20-year-old young woman whose death create disruption across the country and later he was logged under the PMLA case by ED.

After the release, journalist Kaplan said that he is happy to be out after 28 months in jail and he thanked to the media for the support. He further mentioned that the allegations that were put against him were false.

He also said that he will continue his fight against the harsh law as they kept him in jail for more than 5 weeks after his bail.
