Lakhimpur Kheri violence: SC directs UP govt to submit status report by tomorrow

The state government has informed the apex court that a SIT has been appointed to probe the matter and a judicial commission of inquiry has been ordered.

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file the status report by tomorrow on who are the accused against whom the First Information Report (FIR) has been filed in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, in which eight people died including four farmers who were mowed down by a convoy of cars, and how many of them have been arrested.

The state government has informed the apex court that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been appointed to probe the matter and a judicial commission of inquiry has been ordered. The investigation will be headed by Retired Allahabad High Court judge. The government has agreed to file the status report by Friday.

Advocate Shivkumar Tripathi had written to Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana to take the matter amid the huge controversy over Union Minister of state for home Ajay Mishra Teni's son Ashish Mishra being accused of running his car over farmers during protest at Lakhimpur Kheri. The top court will hear the suo motu case on the Lakhimpur violence tomorrow.

Amid the demand for his resignation, Mr Mishra has ruled out to resign from the post and has repeatedly denied his son as well as himself being present at the site of the incident. However, reportedly, he has admitted the car that ran over the protesters belonged to him.
