RJD chief is undergoing treatment at Delhi AIIMS

On Thursday, April 28, 2022, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad is likely to be released on bail in connection with the Rs. 139.35-crore Doranda Treasury case related to the fodder scam.

Lalu Yadav was granted bail in the case by the Jharkhand High Court.

At present, Lalu Prasad is undergoing treatment at Delhi AIIMS Hospital.

A special CBI court in Ranchi had in February held RJD chief and former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad guilty of fraudulent withdrawals from Doranda Treasury in connection with the fifth fodder scam case.

Lalu Prasad, has already been convicted in four other cases of the fodder scam, was also accused in the fifth and the final case.

The Rs950-crore fodder scam involved fraudulent withdrawals of public funds from government treasuries in various districts of undivided Bihar. Lalu Prasad, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison and slapped with a total penalty of Rs60 lakh, has secured bail in four cases related to Dumka, Deoghar and Chaibasa treasuries.

The fodder scam came to light in January 1996 after a raid at the Animal Husbandry Department. The CBI named Prasad as an accused in June 1997. The agency framed charges against Prasad and former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra.

Welcoming the development, Tej Pratap Yadav, the elder son of Lalu Prasad said the granting of bail has come in the “pious” month of Ramzan. “We have been praying to God since long. Finally, our prayers have been answered and my father has been granted bail. We are very grateful to God and the court of law,” he said.
