Last Rites of Gen Rawat, Funeral at 4 PM today

The funeral will be performed at the Brar Square Crematorium


New Delhi: The heart-wrenching death of the Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat with 12 others that including his wife, happened due to a chopper crash in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Today, they will be cremated with full military honours in Delhi.

According to the officials, from 11 am, the bodies of Gen Rawat and his wife will be kept at their Delhi home for family, friends, and the public to pay their final respects. The funeral procession will begin at 2 pm. The funeral has been scheduled for 4 pm at the Brar Square Crematorium, while Brigadier Lidder's funeral has been scheduled there at 9 am.

In a report of news agency SNI, the army has permitted the civilians to pay their respects to General Rawat at his 3, Kamraj Marg residence between 10 am and 12.30 pm today. Those in the forces can pay their tribute to the General between 12.30 pm and 1.30 pm.

On Thursday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led tributes to those who were killed in the chopper crash.

The Mi-17V5 Air Force chopper - described as "the workhorse of the Air Force" and widely seen as a stable aircraft, carrying Gen Rawat crashed after it took off from Sulur. The accident took place within 30 mins of departing Sulur.

Taking notes from the officials, news agency ANI has given the brief by its tweet, "Delhi: The mortal remains of Brig LS Lidder brought to Brar Square, Delhi Cantt. He lost his life in #TamilNaduChopperCrash on 8th December."

The three service chiefs - Army Chief Gen MM Naravane, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari pay tribute to Brig LS Lidder at Brar Square in Delhi Cantonment.

National Security Agency Ajit Doval and Defence Minister Rajnath Sing also paid tribute to Brigadier LS Lidder at Brar Square.
