Lindsey Horan US Soccer’s Female Player of the Year

The 27-Year-old was voted Female Player of the year for the first time

Midfielder Lindsey Horan was voted the US Soccer Federation’s Female Player of the year for the first time. The 27 year led the US in over 22 matches. She played both defensive and attacking midfielder.

Horan had two goals in 14 games this year for the National Women’s Soccer League’s Portland Thorns. She won the US young Female Player of the year award back in 2013 and became the third player to win both awards, joining Tobin Heath and Julie Ertz.

This year fans were able to vote for the US Soccer Player of the year, their votes were weighed as 15%. Votes for Horan’s award were also collected from respective national team coaches, national team players who earned a cap in 2021, members of the US Soccer Board of Directors, US soccer Athletes Council, National Women’s Soccer League head coaches, selected Media members, administrations, and college coaches.

Horan earned 36% votes edging out forward Carli Lloyd with 29% votes, who won the award twice in 2008, and 2015 and midfielder Rose Lavelle with 19% votes.

“Lindsey was very, very good this year, and she deserves this recognition,” Vlatko Andonovski head coach of the USWNT said in a release.

“Her work ethic in the midfield and her mentality to continue as a player is very inspiring. Her ability to control the tempo of a game at the highest level is world-class, as is her ability to win the ball in the midfield and help create goals in the attack.” She added.

The 2021 season, Horan’s 10th with the senior side, was full of personal accomplishments and milestones.

“First I want to congratulate the other nominees. They all had incredible years, especially Carli in her last year with the team. She was outstanding,” Horan said.

“I really appreciate everyone who voted and who supported me in the past year, which was a difficult year for everyone. I’m not really a player who wins these types of awards, so I’m super appreciative and it’s very meaningful to me,” She added after winning the award.

Trinity Rodman, a 19-year-old forward was voted the Young Female Player of the year after earning National Women’s Soccer League Rookie of the Year with the Washington Spirit in the award ceremony. She received 48% votes to win the award.
