Date, Time and Significance

Mahalaya marks the arrival of the new moon, occurring a week prior to Durga Puja. This occasion carries great significance in Hindu customs, particularly among Bengali communities, as it initiates the commencement of Devi Paksha, a two-week period devoted to the worship of the goddess Durga. In the year 2023, Mahalaya is observed on October 14th.

This day officially initiates the preparations and festivities for Durga Puja, a celebration that includes grand processions, intricate decorations, cultural events, and traditional rituals.

Mahalaya signifies the end of Pitru Paksha, a 16-day period during which Hindus honor their ancestors.

Devi Paksha spans nine days and is devoted to the worship of Goddess Durga.

In Eastern India, a prevalent custom on Mahalaya is the performance of tarpan rituals in the Ganges River. Tarpan involves offering water and offerings to departed ancestors, with the belief that this helps their souls transition to the afterlife.
