The mahashivratri happen once in a year during the time of winters end and when the spring and summer begins.

It's believed that among all 12 shivratris (night of shiva) that fall every lunisolar month of Hindu calendar, mahashivratri is the most auspicious one because this day shakti and shiva met and got married to each other to balance the energies of the universe in male and female forms.

During this day people observe fast for 24 hours and avoid food and water for a particular time, they can only eat satvik food.

Chanting and praying "Har Har Mahadev" and "om namah Shivay" will be heard whole day during shivratri and people offer fruits and bel leaves to lord Shiva as it is believed that chanting will give blessings and complete desires.
