Statue was splashed with paint along with graffiti scribbling at base

The statue o Mr Mahatma Gandhi was was defaced and spray painted with Pro-Khalistan and anti-India graffiti. The vandalism took place in the early hours of Thursday near the City Hall in the municipality of Hamilton, Ontario. The statue of the Mahatma has been at that location since 2012.

According to a video of the vandalism, the six-foot-tall bronze monument, which was given by the Indian government, was splashed with paint and graffiti was scribbled around the base of the statue, including hatred of Gandhi himself and an assault on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A Khalistan flag was also attached to the statue's walking stick.

The vandalism was discovered early in the morning, and city officials moved quickly to clean up the statue and graffiti.  A complaint in this regard was received on Thursday afternoon and that an investigation was underway aa told by Hamlinton Police

A Hindu temple in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) was desecrated in February, with anti-India and pro-Khalistan graffiti spraypainted on its back wall, the fourth such occurrence in eight months. The Shri Ram Mandir in Mississauga, Ontario, was the focus of the vandalism.

So far, no arrests have resulted from any of these occurrences. While some have linked them to the so-called Punjab Referendum organised by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice, or SFJ, Canadian law enforcement has yet to establish that relationship.

As with prior incidents, a video of the incident, allegedly recorded during the night of the vandalism, was published on social media by some purportedly pro-Pakistan accounts.
