Malayalam singer dies after collapsing on stage while performing

Edava Basheer, the 87-year-old Malayalam singer popularized the orchestra In Kerala


On Saturday, May 28, Malayalam singer Edava Basheer died after he collapsed on stage while performing. Edava Basheer played an important role in popularizing the orchestra in Kerala.

The 87-year-old singer was performing at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Blue Diamonds Orchestra in Kerala’s Alappuzha district. Basheer collapsed while performing the song ‘Maana Ho Tum Beyhadh Haseen...' by famous Indian singer KJ Yesudas from the Hindi film Toote Toys, released in 1978.

While he was singing the song, he suddenly fell over while trying to sit down on the stage. The mike dropped from his hand and people nearby began to rush onto the stage.

Bashir was rushed to a hospital but he could not be rescued as he was declared dead by doctors.

Basheer was a regular at all temple festivals across Kerala and his song "Akasaroopini, Annapoorneswari" in praise of goddess Durga is one of the songs which was in high demand by the listeners during his public programmes.

He had travelled across the globe with his music and had performed in the United States, United Kingdom, European countries, middle eastern countries and far eastern nations.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheeshan condoled the passing away of Edava Basheer.
