Mamata Banerjee Calls For Protest

Against Amartya Sen's Eviction Notice…

On Wednesday, 03 May 2023, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee called ministers to begin a protest outside Nobel laureate Amartya Sen's residence in Birbhum district to speak up against the Visva-Bharati's eviction notice, an official said.

MSME Minister Chandranath Sinha, the local MLA, will lead this protest, Mamata Banerjee said during a cabinet meeting.

It will be additionally joined by Education Minister Bratya Basu and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim.

She asked not to vacate the spot even if the central university authorities send bulldozers to take possession of the property.

Folk artists from the district should be involved, and various cultural programs should be organized as well, she told the ministers, according to the official.

Singer Kabir Suman and painter Subhaprasanna will also join the program on May 6 and 7, the official said, quoting her.

"The CM advised them not to move an inch even if Visva-Bharati sends bulldozers to take possession," he said.

Last week, CM Mamata Banerjee said that she would start a sit-in in Santiniketan over the issue.

On April 19, Visva-Bharati sent an eviction notice to Mr. Sen, asking him to vacate 13 decimals of the 1.38 acres of land of his residence by May 6.
